My approach and inspiration
An original painting has heart as it shows a glimpse of the world through the artists eyes. It helps to create a special feel to your home, an expression of your personality and is something you will cherish for a long time.
My Art
My Art
I love creating and have done so, for as long as I can remember. I find the challenge of different media invigorating, inspirational and fresh. I paint on canvas, wood panels and paper as each has their own attributes, beauty and creative challenge.
Paper is unforgiving in many ways so I need to be responsive and fearless, and is my favourite media for ink and collage.
Wood can be painted, collaged, sanded back, scratched into, and built with many layers creating pieces that can have immense depth and history.
Canvas is flexible, it responds beautifully to working directly with my hands and fingers, and allows me to work big!
When I paint I use colour intuitively. I have always been attracted to certain colours and I’ve never shied away from wearing strong colour or having it in my home, even though somewhat restrained. Even colour lovers need a place for their eyes to rest.
Living most of my life in the tropical far north of Australia where the sunlight is intense, the colours in nature are concentrated and intensified, especially after heavy rain. The oceans range from the most stunning blues to greens, and when flying above the Great Barrier Reef and its coral cays, leaving, or returning home, I am inspired by the most beautiful myriad of colour.
Painting for me is my safe space. I find it intoxicating because it can be challenging, frustrating, and exciting at the same time. As I lay down my first colour over the entire canvas, intuition kicks in and the layering of colour and composition begins, usually with no real direction in mind, maybe just a thought. Constant appraising, ‘listening’ to the painting, taking risks and pushing through the ugly stage keeps my work vibrant and energetic until I know it’s finished.
Colour can uplift, relax, excite us and make us feel alive. Whether it’s an abstract, a portrait or work on paper I’m deeply inspired by the sounds, colour and people around me no matter where that may be. Each piece of my artwork is a response to the visceral beauty of everyday life.
Owning original art allows a gentle distraction from the world we live in which can be hectic, fast moving and time poor.
My travel
I have always loved travelling. It’s been a priority in our family. I love other cultures, and am constantly fascinated by their art, their food, their history and their everyday way of life. During my travels, I’ve noticed intense feelings when I’m in a different city, country or environment - a response to the light, atmosphere, history, people, architecture and landscape. These ‘feeling memories’ intuitively work into my art that I share with you.
